THE ZAMBONI COMPANY ENTERS ITS FOURTH
DECADE OF OLYMPIC PARTICIPATION
Paramount, California, March 01, 2001
The Frank J. Zamboni Company has
participated in many historic events, but one of the
most significant is the Winter Olympic Games. The
2002 Winter Olympics, which are being held in Salt
Lake City, Utah, will be a "homecoming" of
sorts for the Zamboni Company. Frank Zamboni, the
inventor of the world's first ice resurfacer, was
born in Eureka, Utah, in 1901, which is just
southeast of Salt Lake City.
The Salt Lake Olympic facilities have
selected Zamboni exclusively for ice resurfacing and
seven machines in all will maintain the ice,
including one new Model 700 machine, which is the
largest Zamboni ice resurfacing machine made.
Zamboni machines will be on the ice for all skating
and hockey related events, including the women's
hockey, men's hockey, figure skating and speed
skating competitions.
The Zamboni® Ice Resurfacing Machine made
its Olympic debut at the Winter Olympics in Squaw
Valley, California in 1960. The Squaw Valley Games
were the first to use a mechanical ice resurfacer,
with six Zamboni machines maintaining the ice
sheets. As the Games approached, Frank Zamboni was
working on his latest innovation: an electric
version of the ice resurfacing machines, which until
that time had been powered with gasoline. As the
Games began, the very first electric Zamboni Ice
Resurfacing Machine moved out on to the Olympic ice
surface and history was made.
Since that time, the machines have been a
part of almost every Olympic ice event. The machines
were witness to the Gold medal victory of the 1980
United States Hockey Team in Lake Placid. Most
recently, the machines were featured on the ice in
Nagano, Japan for the 1998 Winter Olympics.
It has been over 50 years since Frank J.
Zamboni developed his first ice resurfacing machine.
Since that time, thousands have been sold around the
world and the Zamboni Company has seen an affinity
develop for their product, which was brought to
"life" when Snoopy® of PEANUTS fame took
to the ice with a Zamboni machine in 1980. Zamboni's
Olympic participation through the years continues to
be a source of great pride for the Company.
